BRETS PETC + Cambridge TKT vs TEFL, TESOL, CELTA & B.Ed: Complete Comparison for Indian Teachers
Teachers in India comparing English teaching certifications face a confusing alphabet soup: TEFL, TESOL, CELTA, TKT, B.Ed and CTET. Understanding who actually issues the certificate, whether there is an external exam, and what it costs in Indian rupees prevents expensive mistakes.
How to Tell an Externally Examined Qualification from a Self-Issued Certificate
"TEFL" (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and "TESOL" (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) are generic industry acronyms — not a single examining body. Anyone can set up a website and issue a "120-hour TEFL PDF" with no external exam. By contrast, TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) is an official examination owned, set and certificated by Cambridge English (Cambridge University Press & Assessment).
Meanwhile, CELTA is also a Cambridge qualification, but it typically costs ₹1,30,000 to ₹1,80,000+ and requires intensive full-time attendance. The BRETS Professional English Teacher Certificate (PETC) at ₹30,000 (plus the exam centre entry fee) gives Indian working teachers and graduates 60 hours of practical methodology plus preparation for all three Cambridge TKT modules at one-Monday-to-Friday hour a day.

Open PETC Course & ModulesTalk to admissions- 60 hours — mixed — live classes, online and recorded sessions
- 3 months — 12 teaching weeks
- Mon – Fri — one hour a day
- Cambridge TKT — modules 1, 2 and 3
How the programme runs
Sixty hours of teacher training over three months, mixing live classes with online and recorded sessions, ending in the Cambridge English Teaching Knowledge Test.
Mixed content across 3 months — live classes, online and recorded sessions, and venue-based workshops where Cambridge or the exam centre ask for them. Not a video library you work through alone.
An hour a day is a timetable a working teacher can actually keep for twelve weeks.
New batches open through the week. Admissions confirm your commencement date once you enrol, so you start with a group at the same stage.
Taught by Nishad Ahmed Brets through demonstration, micro-teaching and continuous feedback — communicative language teaching, the direct, translation and TPR methods, principled eclecticism, warmers and energisers, PPP against ESA, and teaching grammar to learners who have to speak it.
The Cambridge qualification
The programme prepares you for, and enters you to, the TKT — Teaching Knowledge Test from Cambridge English (Cambridge University Press & Assessment) — the three core modules, examined one module at a time.
The language a teacher needs to describe language: grammar, lexis, phonology, the four skills, and how learners actually acquire them.
Planning a lesson and a sequence of lessons, selecting and adapting course material, and using the resources a real classroom has.
Classroom language, grouping and pacing, giving feedback, correcting error, and the teacher roles that make a class speak.
- Test format
- Each module is a single 80-minute multiple-choice test, sat on paper or on screen.
- How it is graded
- There is no pass or fail. Each module is reported in Bands 1 to 4, where Band 4 is extensive knowledge, and each module you sit earns its own Cambridge certificate.
- Entry fee
- Entry fees are set by the authorised Cambridge exam centre and are paid there, in addition to the course fee. Admissions confirm the current centre fee before you enter.

Frequently asked questions
Is Cambridge TKT more respected than a generic online TEFL certificate?
Yes. Because TKT is examined and awarded directly by Cambridge English under proctored exam conditions, schools in India and the Middle East treat it as an authentic benchmark, whereas unproctored TEFL PDFs have no independent verification.
