The real obstacle
You already know English. You just don't say it.
Kerala has near-universal literacy and English-medium degrees, and still produces adults who go silent in interviews. That is not an education failure — it is what happens when a language is taught to be written and read, and never trained as speech.
The translation delay
Most learners here compose in Malayalam and translate before speaking. The pause is small and it is fatal: it makes you sound uncertain and it means you lose the thread of a fast conversation. TPR attacks exactly this by linking English to action rather than to a Malayalam equivalent.
Sounds the first language does not use
Every language leaves gaps in the ear of its speakers. AI pronunciation scoring names the specific sound that cost the mark on each attempt, which is the difference between being told your accent needs work and being told which sound to fix.
Rhythm, not vocabulary
Malayalam gives syllables roughly even weight; English compresses the unstressed ones hard. Get the rhythm wrong and grammatically perfect English still lands as difficult to follow — this is usually what people mean when they say a speaker has "a strong accent".
No low-stakes place to practise

Junior English and Accent Training for Kids
Communicative English for school-age learners, and neutral pronunciation work while the ear is still forming. TPR suits children particularly well — it asks them to move rather than to sit still and repeat.
Accent Training — one week, Kochi
A dedicated phonology-led programme for adults, the first of its kind in Kerala. One week, on campus, on the two things above: the sounds and the rhythm.

Spoken English in Kerala — questions people ask
Is the online spoken English course live or recorded?
Live, with a personal trainer. Recorded lessons cannot assess speech, and speech is the entire problem the course exists to solve — a learner who watches forty videos has still not said anything to anybody. The course runs 40 days and speaking is assessed every session rather than at the end.
Can I take the course from outside Kerala or from the Gulf?
Yes. The online course is delivered live over the internet and BRETS has trained learners across Kerala and in the Gulf. Timings are agreed per batch, which matters for learners in a different time zone — a fixed IST evening slot is the usual reason an online course fails somebody working in the Gulf.
Does BRETS teach in Malayalam or in English?
The teaching is in English, because TPR works by attaching the language directly to action rather than routing it through translation. Trainers speak Malayalam and use it to handle a genuine misunderstanding, but the class itself is not a translation exercise — that is precisely the habit the method removes.
What does BRETS do about a Malayalam accent?
Two specific things. Sounds: English uses distinctions Malayalam does not, and AI pronunciation scoring names the exact sound that cost the mark instead of a trainer saying "that was not quite right". Is there a course for children?
Junior English is communicative English for school-age learners, and Accent Training for Kids works on neutral pronunciation while the ear is still forming it — which is the age at which accent work is easiest and least effortful.
